Itinerary

Day 1Shoebill stork tracking in Mabamba

You will meet at an agreed point with our driver from Glory Summit Tours who will brief you about the safari then you will set off for Mabamba Swamp which will take about an hour. When you get to Mabamba you will get onto a canoe and find your way through the swamp with a guide to ensure you don’t miss out on any wildlife including the Shoebill stork, which when found you will watch from a distance as it enjoys the swamp or the lung fish which is its favorite thing to eat. You will also see other birds like papyrus gonolek, African marsh harrier, northern brown-throated weaver, yellow-billed duck, blue-breasted bee-eater, papyrus yellow warbler, long-toed lapwing, swamp flycatcher, superb sunbird, eastern plantain-eater, orange weaver, broad-billed roller, and many more. Once done, you will find your way back to Entebbe town, and have lunch, after which you will head to the Uganda Wildlife Education Center for some more birding and expect to see birds like the pink-backed pelican, peafowl, ostrich, grey crowned crane, African grey parrot, African fish eagle, ibis, little egret, grey heron, black-headed weaver, black-necked weaver, black-headed gonolek, black and white casqued hornbill, and many more with animals like lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, and zebras. When done, you will return to your lodging, have dinner, and retire for the night.

Day 2Transfer to Lake Mburo

You will have breakfast, check out of your lodging, and set off for Lake Mburo at 8:00 am which will take 3-4 hours with a brief stop at the equator for some picture-taking before proceeding to the park. You will arrive in time for lunch, after which you will check in and prepare for an afternoon boat cruise at Lake Mburo. During the cruise you will spot animals like hippos, buffaloes, antelopes, waterbucks, bushbucks, and crocodiles; birds like African fish eagle, shoebill, pied kingfisher, papyrus gonolek, double-toothed barbet, African wattled lapwing, red-faced barbet, yellow-throated tinkerbird, egrets, herons, ross’s turaco, narina trogon, African Finfoot, and may more. After the boat cruise, you will return to your lodging for dinner and rest for the night.

Day 3Birding and transfer to Queen Elizabeth:

You will have breakfast and then you will head to Rubanga forest for birding, expect to see birds like green pigeon, harrier hawk, double-toothed barbet, shoebill stork, narina trogon, grey-backed cameroptera, ross’s turaco, red-shouldered cuckoo, emerald spotted wood dove, bare-faced go-away bird, green wood hoopoe, Nubian woodpeckers bustard, francolin, and many more; tree species like gigs, platycaluz, palm and acacia and animals like buffaloes, antelopes, waterbucks, impalas, bushbucks, topis and more. You will then head back to the lodge after birding to freshen up and have lunch. Once done, you will check out of the hotel and exit the park for Queen Elizabeth which will take about 3-4 hours. As you leave Lake Mburo National Park, you’ll traverse gently undulating landscapes dotted with acacia trees, grazing cattle, and occasional wildlife like zebras and antelopes and panoramic views of the Rift Valley floor as you approach Queen Elizabeth. When you get to your lodging, you will check-in, have dinner, and retire for the night.

Day 4Birding and boat cruise

You will wake up to a good breakfast, then you will be driven out to the Maramagambo forest for your birding at 8:00 am. You will have a bottle of water as you start on your hike, expect to see bird species like blue-breasted kingfisher, little grebe, grey-cheeked hornbill, African green pigeon, olive long-tailed cuckoo, yellow-throated leaflove, African Finfoot, red-chested cuckoo, black cuckoo, African emerald cuckoo, yellow-bill, Rwenzori turaco, ross’s turaco, black-headed batis, flycatchers, pigeons, warblers, bat hawk, and more. The forest is also known for harboring several specialist bird species that adapted to the forest environment such as the African green broadbill, which is endemic to the Albertine Rift region and often found in the dense undergrowth of the forest. Away from the birds, the forest is also a habitat to primates like chimpanzees, red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys, vervet monkeys, olive baboons, black and white colobus monkeys, and more with animals like buffaloes, hyenas, genets, elephants, leopards, mongoose, warthogs, waterbucks, oribi and others. The hike will take about 2-3 hours depending on the pace during the hike. Once done with the hike, you will head back to your lodging, freshen up and have lunch. After lunch you will head to the Kazinga channel for a boat cruise, the boat cruise offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including savannas, wetlands, and distant mountain ranges. During the boat cruise, expect to spot numerous water birds, including African fish eagles, pied kingfishers, African skimmers, herons, egrets, yellow-billed stork, spoonbill, knob-billed duck, Egyptian goose, great white pelican, common sandpiper, African jacana, water thick-knee, terns, cormorants and various migratory species; wildlife like hippos, crocodiles, elephants, buffalo, warthogs, giant forest hogs, waterbucks and various antelope species, making it an excellent spot for wildlife viewing and this cruise will take about 2-3hours. Once done you will head back to your lodging, enjoy the sunset en route, then freshen up and have dinner. You will enjoy a campfire as the night grows old and retire at will.

Day 5Checkout and departure

With breakfast done, you will check out of the hotel and exit the park for Kampala. On your way to Kampala, you will enjoy the beautiful scenic views of the countryside and also have a chance to take some pictures while at it. A stopover in Mbarara for lunch and another at the Equator for more pictures and exploring the craft world will be done. Then proceed to Kampala at an agreed point for drop off which will mark the end of your 5 days Uganda birding safari combined with wildlife safari.
