Tour Overview

10 days Uganda birding and Kenya wildlife safari is the best way to explore Uganda’s birdlife and Kenya’s wildlife. This is an opportunity for you to encounter the Big five animals and other wildlife in Kenya as you make visits to Kenya’s popular safari destinations such as Aberdare National Park known for its high concentration of rhinos, Lake Nakuru National Park that is beautified with surging pink seas of the Rift valley created by over millions of flamingoes gathered together and Masai Mara National Park popular for hosting one of the world’s ten natural wonders known as the great wildebeest migration. Uganda is a haven to over 1100bird species that constitutes 50% of Africa’s bird life making it a perfect destination for birding. Your sample destinations will be the Entebbe botanical gardens, heritage trail, Mabamba wetland and Lake Mburo National Park. 

Itinerary

Day 1Arrival and transfer to Aberdare National Park – evening game viewing

A professional driver guide from Glory summit tours and travel will be waiting to receive you at Jomo Kenyatta international airport after which he will take you through a briefing of your travel plan while highlighting your safari activity duration and expectations. You will set off for your 4 hours’ drive to Aberdare National Park where you will arrive to check-in at a lodge and have lunch. After lunch you will make your way with the guidance of your driver guide to Aberdare National Park’s savannah plains for an evening game viewing. Several animals will be spotted having their day’s last meal for example rhinos, hartebeests, elands, zebras, waterbucks, giraffes, buffaloes, grant’s gazelle, elephants, cheetahs, jackals, Thompson’s gazelle to mention but a few. There are as well various bird species to be observed including the ostriches. You will return to your lodge to have dinner and an overnight.

Day 2Morning game viewing – depart for Lake Nakuru National Park

Today morning have your breakfast and return to the Park’s plains for game viewing where you will have the opportunity to capture animals you could have missed out during the evening game drive in the previous day. Early risers will be spotted pasturing while their predators try out their hunting tricks on them and as nocturnal animals run back to their hide outs. You will be driven back to your lodge to have lunch after which you will checkout to embark on your drive to Lake Nakuru National Park. Lake Nakuru National Park is a charming wildlife haven that lies on the floor of the Great Rift Valley encircled by bushy and wooded grasslands. Upon arrival, you will check-in at your pre-arranged lodge, have dinner and an overnight.

Day 3Lake Nakuru boat cruise – transfer to Masai Mara

Wake up to a scrumptious breakfast and head off for a morning boat cruise where you will be transferred to the launch point jetty located below the Baboon view point. You will have a briefing after which you will smoothly cruise along the Lake’s waters while enjoying its wildlife. For bird lovers, this will be your favorite as you enjoy the bird species that are found along the shores of the Lake within the savannah grasslands and woodlands as well as the entire corners of the Lake. You will not miss out seeing several bird species for example the lesser flamingos, Egyptian geese, pelicans, African fish eagle, greater flamingos to mention but a few. You will be driven back to your lodge for lunch after which you will checkout to embark on your 3 to 4 hours’ drive to Masai Mara National reserve arriving to check-in at a lodge to have dinner and an overnight.

Day 4Entire day Masai Mara game viewing

Masai Mara National Reserve in one of the protected areas with the highest concentration of animals in the entire world. This National Reserve harbors more than 40% of Africa’s larger mammals that will be encountered during your safari. Have your morning breakfast and head off for an entire day game viewing in the Masai Mara plains where you will spot several animals for example the Big five, giraffes, cheetahs, zebras, hippopotamuses, aardwolves, antelopes, bushbucks, coke’s hartebeests, common elands, gazelles to mention but a few. Break off for a picnic lunch in the jungle under a Figtree while you have clear views of the entire Mara plains. After lunch you will be driven close to the Mara River to catchup with the wildebeest migration as millions of wildebeests, zebras, gazelles cross the river from Serengeti in Tanzania. This is exciting, wondrous and dramatic as you watch crocodiles and other predators hunt them down for their day’s meal. Return back to your lodge in the evening for your dinner and an overnight.

Day 5Flight to Entebbe – birding in Entebbe botanical gardens

Today morning have your breakfast and checkout of your lodge in Masai Mara to be driven to Jomo Kenyatta international airport. This drive lasts for about 4 hours where you will arrive to catch your flight to Entebbe international airport of Uganda. Upon your arrival, you will be driven to a restaurant in Entebbe to have lunch after which you will proceed to Entebbe botanical gardens to explore its bird species. You will have the opportunity to sport several bird species for example the yellow-billed stork, purple-banded sun bird, glossy ibis, African jacana, yellow-white eye, eastern grey plantain-eater, pink-backed pelican, lesser jacana to mention but a few. You will then be driven to your reserved hotel in Entebbe to check-in, have dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 6Heritage trail birding

Have your morning breakfast and be driven to the Heritage trail to encounter more bird species for example cuckoo shrike, southern banded snake eagle, brown twin spot, great sparrow hawk, short toed snake eagle, violet backed starling, brown crowned tchargra to mention but a few. You will have your lunch after which you will connect to Lutembe for a canoe ride where you will be able to watch several bird species such as white-winged black terns, grey headed gulls, papyrus Gonolek and many more water birds. In the evening you will retire off the canoe to be driven back to your hotel to have dinner and an overnight.

day 7Whole day Mabamba swamp

You will have your breakfast served and set off with packed lunch to Mabamba swamp for more bird watching. Mabamba wetland is an Important Bird Area known for hosting the globally threatened shoebill stork and several other 260 bird species. You will opt for a canoe ride along the wetland deep into the swamp since it is the best way to enjoy birding with in this swamp. Bird species to look out for along this swamp include the elusive shoebill stork, pygmy goose, Carruther’s cisticola, palm-nut vulture, Clarke’s weaver, white winged warbler, blue swallow, pallid harrier, swamp fly-catcher, papyrus Gonolek, viellot’s weaver, grosbeak weaver to mention but a few. In the evening you will walk following a track beneath the wetland to gaze at bird species that thrive around cultivated lands for example the grey crowned cranes, orange breasted waxbill, chapin’s flycatcher, long crested eagle, secretary bird to mention but a few. Return to the hotel to have your dinner and an overnight.

Day 8Transfer to Lake Mburo N/P – evening game drive

Grab yourself a cup of coffee and checkout to embark on your drive to Lake Mburo National Park situated in western Uganda. This journey lasts for about 4 hours with a stopover at the Equator line in Kayabwe where you will have an experience of where the earth is divided into two equal parts as you take photos at the equator monument. You will proceed with your drive to Lake Mburo National Park arriving at Sanga gate where you will be welcomed by hissing bird types that will easily take away your sight. More than 310 bird species have been recorded in Lake Mburo National Park, therefore expect to have the best birding experience. You will arrive to check-in at your booked lodge and have lunch, after which you will head off for an evening game drive along Zebra track where you will be able to see birds like African grey-hornbill, African wattled lapwing, black-bellied bustard, greater painted snipe and many more. You will be driven back to your lodge to have dinner and an overnight.

Day 9Nature walk – afternoon boat cruise

You will have your breakfast served in the early morning and head off to Rwonyo where you will meet your ranger guide. You will hike through woodlands and savannah grasslands as you spot several bird species roaming the Park for example mosque swallow, red-faced barbet, southern ground hornbill, greater painted snipe and many more. You will further proceed to the salt licks where you will see more bird species and mammals since it offers a great view point. You will hike back to your lodge for lunch after which you will head off for a boat cruise along Lake Mburo to further see various water birds. The boat cruise lasts to about 3 to 4 hours after which you will return to your lodge to have dinner and an overnight.

Day 10Lakeside track game viewing and birding – departure

Today morning have your morning breakfast and head off for a game drive along the lake-side track and the lakeside campground where you will spot several animals and bird species for example lesser and greater warbler, blue-headed coucal, African water rail, African fin foot, spur-winged plovers, African darter, papyrus Gonolek to mention but a few and several animals. Get back to your lodge for lunch and checkout to be driven back to Kampala with a stop-over at Mpambire drum makers arriving in the city center to be dropped off at a hotel of your choice or at the airport depending on the time of your flight.
