Tour Overview

Mabira Forest, one of Uganda’s largest tropical rainforests, is an exceptional experience for both seasoned and novice birders. Located about 56 km east of Kampala, near Jinja, Mabira is renowned for its biodiversity, hosting over 315 bird species, several primates, and rare plant species, making it a birdwatcher’s haven. A day birding in Mabira will offer a chance to spot birds like white-faced whistling duck, Egyptian goose, yellow-billed duck, helmeted guineafowl, nahan’s partridge, latham francolin, rock pigeon, laughing dove, black-bellied bustard, great blue turaco, eastern plantain-eater, blue malkoha, grey-crowned crane, Eurasian moorhen, and many more with some mammals like duikers, bush pigs, red-tailed monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, baboons, colobus monkeys, and many more. The trip starts and ends in Kampala.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1Birding in Mabira Forest

You will be picked up by our driver guide from Glory Summit Tours at an agreed-upon point, he will brief you on how the day will move, and then you will set off for Mabira forest at 7:00 am, which is about 2-3 hours. You will have a stop at Sezibwa Falls for a cultural tour and also enjoy the beautiful views of the falls; you will view some birds like red-chested cuckoo, woodland kingfisher, great blue turaco, black mackins, snake birds, olive birds, grey-headed sparrow, black bishop, red-eyed dove and many more. When done, you will have an early lunch. After which you will proceed to Mabira forest, and once you get there you will go to the Mabira eco-tourism site, and get briefed before you head into the forest with an expert guide, the hike will take about 2-3 hours. Expect to spot birds like nahan’s francolin, grey parrot, cassin’s hawk-eagle, forest wood-hoopoe, yellow-spotted barbet, African pied hornbill, great blue turaco, white-thighed hornbill, purple-throated cuckooshrike, African dwarf kingfisher and many more. While birding you might see some mammals like monkeys, baboons, mangabeys, duikers, and others. Once done, you will be picked up at the starting point by our driver who will get you back to Kampala which will take 2-3 hours and once at the agreed point, your 1 day birding in Mabira will come to an end.
